Establishment
The Archdiocese of Natal traces its origins to the creation of the Diocese of Natal on 25 August 1909 by Pope Pius X, carved from territory previously under the Diocese of Paraíba to address the pastoral needs of the growing Catholic population in Rio Grande do Norte.

The see began as a missionary territory in the early twentieth century. It was elevated to the rank of archdiocese on 16 February 1952 by Pope Pius XII, becoming the metropolitan see for northeastern Brazil. Subsequent boundary adjustments established its current suffragan dioceses.
