Establishment

The Archdiocese of Las Vegas traces its origins to the Diocese of Las Vegas, canonically erected on March 21, 1977, by Pope Paul VI through the apostolic constitution Las Vegas in Nevada.[1] It was created by partitioning the Diocese of Reno, responding to the rapid population growth in southern Nevada driven by tourism and migration.[2] On May 27, 2023, Pope Francis elevated it to metropolitan archdiocese, establishing the Ecclesiastical Province of Las Vegas.[3]

Early Development

The diocese began under Bishop Joseph A. Francis, addressing the spiritual needs of a booming Las Vegas amid casino expansion and immigration.[4] Boundary adjustments in 1981 incorporated additional territory from the Diocese of Reno.

Elevation to Archdiocese

In 2023, Pope Francis restructured the province, making Las Vegas the metropolitan see with Reno and Salt Lake City as suffragans, reflecting demographic shifts.[5]
