The University of Saint Mary of the Lake, commonly known as Mundelein Seminary, is a Catholic major seminary and school of theology located in Mundelein, Illinois, just north of Chicago. It forms priests, deacons, and lay leaders for the Archdiocese of Chicago and beyond, serving seminarians from nearly 30 dioceses across the country and around the world.
History
The University of Saint Mary of the Lake was chartered in 1844 and has been in continuous operation since 1921. It is one of only seven schools in North America established as a Pontifical Faculty of Theology by the Holy See.
Campus and Formation
The campus is home to Mundelein Seminary and the School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization. Its curriculum includes a Teaching Parish Program, two full-time internships, a simulation lab, and a study-pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The Feehan Memorial Library and McEssy Theological Resource Center offer students access to over 200,000 print volumes and electronic resources. The campus also includes a Conference Center that hosts group retreats, meetings, and other functions for approximately 25,000–35,000 people annually. The university's address is 1000 E. Academics
Mundelein Seminary and the School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization grant degrees through the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. Those preparing to become Permanent Deacons complete their studies through the Deacon Formation Program. The School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization and Escuela de Liderazgo para la Evangelización offer degree and certificate programs for full- and part-time lay students. The university's faculty is among the largest in the country, and its professors serve as members or experts to pontifical academies, councils, and the International Theological Commission.
