St. Joseph is a territorial parish of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (Latin Church), located at 16 S. Spring Garden Street in Ambler, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Dedicated to Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and patron of the universal Church, the parish has served the Ambler community since 1920.

Founded during a period of growth for Catholic communities north of Philadelphia, St. Joseph began without a church building, celebrating its first Mass in a local public hall before constructing permanent facilities over the following decades. The parish operated its own parochial school for fifty years before merging its educational mission with a neighboring parish.

Today St. Joseph continues as a territorial parish offering regular weekend and weekday Masses to the Ambler area.[1]

History

St. Joseph Parish was established in 1920 by Archbishop Dennis J. Dougherty of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, who appointed Reverend Joseph T. McDermott as the parish's first pastor.[2] Because no church building yet existed, the first Mass for the new parish community was celebrated at the Ambler Opera House.[2]

In 1921, the parish obtained the services of the Sisters of Saint Joseph to assist in the education of parish children.[2] On December 16, 1923, the parish's first permanent church building was completed, a brick-and-concrete structure that also housed an auditorium used for parish social gatherings.[2] Father Jeremiah F. Coyle arrived as the parish's second pastor in January 1924 and purchased a house at 27 S. Spring Garden Street for continued parish use.[2]

Ground was broken for a combined church-school building on March 18, 1928, and St. Joseph's Parochial School opened its doors on September 17, 1928.[2] The parish continued under a succession of pastors through the mid-twentieth century, including Reverend Joseph P. McGever (1941), Reverend James F. Burgoyne (1954), and Reverend James F. Gallagher (1968).[2]

In September 1976, a new church building at the corner of Poplar and Main Streets was dedicated, providing the parish with expanded worship space to serve its growing congregation.[2] In 1978, St. Joseph School merged with the school of the neighboring St. Anthony Parish to form the regional school known as Ambler Catholic.[2] As of the mid-2010s, the parish continued to offer four weekend Masses to its congregation.[3]
