St. Joseph's Seminary and College (commonly known as Dunwoodie) is a Roman Catholic major seminary in Yonkers, New York. It is the major seminary of the Archdiocese of New York and also serves as the principal theologate for the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
History
Founded in 1896, St. Joseph’s Seminary has been the primary center of priestly formation for the Archdiocese of New York for more than a century. Located in the Dunwoodie section of Yonkers, it has trained generations of priests who have served in the New York metropolitan area and beyond.
In recent decades the seminary has expanded its role as a regional center of formation, welcoming seminarians from multiple partner dioceses as well as international students.
Formation and Academic Programs
St. Joseph’s offers the full program of priestly formation, including the Propaedeutic Stage, Discipleship Stage, and Configuration Stage. It grants the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees and is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
The seminary also provides graduate theological education for permanent deacon candidates, religious, and lay students at its Yonkers campus and additional sites.
Current Status
As of the mid-2020s the seminary enrolls roughly 80–90 men in priestly formation (with total institutional enrollment higher when including other programs). The rector is Auxiliary Bishop James Massa of Brooklyn.
