Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile, located in the central part of the country in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, nestled in the Santiago Basin between the Andes and the Chilean Coastal Range. As of 2025 estimates, the metropolitan population is approximately 6,796,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile and serves as the spiritual and administrative center of Catholicism in Chile, with the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago as its mother church and numerous historic shrines reflecting strong Marian devotion.
History
Santiago’s Catholic heritage dates from the Spanish founding and has been shaped by earthquakes, independence, and modern social movements.
Early settlement
Santiago was founded on February 12, 1541, by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia as Santiago de Nueva Extremadura. It quickly became the colonial capital.[1]
Catholic evangelization
Catholicism arrived with the Spanish and was established from the founding. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, located on the north side of Plaza de Armas, was begun in the 16th century and rebuilt multiple times after earthquakes (especially 1647 and 1730). Its current neoclassical structure was largely completed in the 19th century. The Archdiocese of Santiago was erected in 1561 and elevated to metropolitan status in 1840. Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Nuestra Señora del Carmen) grew significantly; she was proclaimed patroness of Chile in 1923 by Pope Pius XI. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes at Lo Vásquez and the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel are major pilgrimage sites. The Church of San Francisco houses the historic image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel that accompanied Chilean independence forces.
Modern faith life
As of recent statistics (around 2021–2023), the Archdiocese of Santiago reports approximately 4.5–5 million Catholics (roughly 60–65% of the diocesan population of about 7.5 million), with over 200 parishes. Chile has seen a notable decline in Catholic affiliation in recent decades, yet Santiago remains the center of national Catholic life, with major events at the cathedral and shrines. The annual pilgrimage to Lo Vásquez on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July 16) draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
