Saint Thorlac
Saint Thorlac Thorhallsson (Þorlákr Þórhallsson; also Thorlak or Thorlacus), bishop and confessor, is the patron saint of Iceland and a model of pastoral zeal and clerical reform in the medieval North. Born around 1133 in Iceland, he studied in Paris and London, embraced the Augustinian canons regular, and was consecrated Bishop of Skálholt in 1178. Biography
Birth
Saint Thorlac Thorhallsson was born around 1133 at Hlíðarendi in Fljótshlíð, southern Iceland, to a family of good standing. From a young age he showed intellectual promise and piety.
This early formation in a newly Christian land prepared him for leadership.
Early Life
Saint Thorlac studied abroad in Paris and England, deepening his knowledge of theology and canon law. Upon return, he joined the Augustinian canons at Þykkvibær, where he served as prior and introduced stricter observance.
His reputation for holiness and learning led to his election as Bishop of Skálholt.
Occupation
