Saint Stanislaus of Krakow
Saint Stanislaus of Kraków (born July 26, 1030 AD in Szczepanów, Lesser Poland; died April 11, 1079 AD in Kraków, Poland) was the Bishop of Kraków who was martyred by King Bolesław II of Poland. He is the principal patron of Poland and one of the most important figures in Polish national identity. He was canonized by Pope Innocent IV at Assisi in 1253 — the first Polish saint formally canonized. His feast day is April 11.

Biography
Stanislaus was born July 26, 1030, in Szczepanów, Lesser Poland. He studied theology in Gniezno and possibly Paris. He was ordained a priest and became canon of the Kraków cathedral. He was consecrated Bishop of Kraków in 1072.
His episcopate involved vigorous pastoral work and confrontation with King Bolesław II, whose behavior (including cruelty to subjects and the alleged abduction of a nobleman's wife) Stanislaus condemned. He eventually excommunicated the king.
On April 11, 1079, while Stanislaus was celebrating Mass at the church of Saint Michael on the Skałka in Kraków, the king came with soldiers to arrest him. The soldiers refused to enter. The king entered and killed Stanislaus himself with a sword. His body was dismembered.
His murder provoked an enormous response. Bolesław II was forced to flee Poland. The bishops of Poland placed the country under interdict.
The miraculous resurrection of Piotrowin, who testified on Stanislaus's behalf before his death, became the most famous miracle of early Polish hagiography.
Pope Innocent IV canonized him at Assisi on September 17, 1253.
