The Angel of Healing

Raphael is one of the seven archangels named in Scripture and tradition. His name in Hebrew means "God has healed" (Refa'el), establishing his identity as the angel of healing from the earliest tradition.

He appears prominently in the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit, where he travels in human disguise with the young Tobias from Nineveh to Media. He instructs Tobias to use the organs of a fish to cure his father Tobit's blindness and to drive away the demon Asmodeus. He reveals his identity after the mission is complete: "I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and go in before the glory of the Holy One" (Tobit 12:15).

The Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 20) explicitly names him as the angel over the spirits of men and assigns him the mission of healing the earth corrupted by fallen angels.

Early Christian tradition identified the unnamed angel who stirred the waters at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:4) as Raphael.
