Saint Luke Hwang Soktu
Saint Luke Hwang Soktu (born c. 1813 AD in Joseon, Korea; died March 30, 1866 AD in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, Korea) was a Korean Catholic martyr who was beheaded during the Byeonginyangyo persecution under the regent흥선대원군 (Heungseon Daewongun) in 1866. He is one of the 103 Martyrs of Korea canonized by Pope John Paul II in Seoul on May 6, 1984. His feast day is September 20 (shared with the 103 Martyrs of Korea).

Biography
Luke Hwang Soktu was a Korean Catholic layman who lived during the Joseon Dynasty. Details of his early life are not preserved. He was arrested during the Byeonginyangyo persecution of 1866, ordered by Regent Heungseon Daewongun, which aimed to eradicate Catholicism from Korea and targeted both foreign missionaries and Korean Catholic leaders.
He was beheaded at Cheongju on March 30, 1866.
Pope Pius XI beatified him in 1925 as one of a larger group of Korean martyrs. Pope John Paul II canonized 103 Korean martyrs — including Luke Hwang Soktu — at a Mass in Seoul on May 6, 1984, the first papal canonization ever held outside Rome.
