Saint Lawrence of Novara (born unknown; died c. 397 AD in Novara, Piedmont, Italy) was a priest of Novara in northern Italy who was martyred along with several companions, traditionally by being thrown into a furnace, during a period of pagan reaction. He is the patron of the Diocese of Novara. His feast day is April 30.

Biography

Lawrence was a priest of the early Church in Novara, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Details of his life beyond the fact of his priesthood and martyrdom are not preserved. He was killed along with several companions — some accounts include young men under his instruction — and died by being thrown into a furnace, according to the tradition of the Diocese of Novara.

His martyrdom is placed around 397 AD. Novara was an early Christian center in the Po Valley of northern Italy; the diocese dates to at least the early 4th century.

He is venerated as the patron of the Diocese of Novara and his feast is observed on April 30.
