Saint John Peter Neel
Saint John Peter Neel (born March 13, 1832 AD in Sainte-Foy-l'Argentière, Rhône, France; died February 18, 1862 AD in Guizhou, China) was a French Paris Foreign Missions priest who was martyred in Guizhou Province, China during a wave of anti-Christian persecution in 1862. He was executed together with three Vietnamese Christian catechists: Martin Tho, Martin Tinh, and Augustine Schoeffler. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000 as one of the 120 Martyrs of China. His feast day is July 9 (shared with the 120 Martyrs of China).

Biography
John Peter Neel was born on March 13, 1832 in Sainte-Foy-l'Argentière in the Rhône department of France. He was ordained a priest by the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP) and sent to China, where he was assigned to Guizhou Province in the southwestern highlands.
He worked in Guizhou for two years, secretly ministering to the Chinese Catholic community. In 1862, during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Tongzhi period, he was arrested. He was executed by beheading on February 18, 1862, together with three Vietnamese catechists who had been serving the same community: Martin Tho, Martin Tinh, and Augustine Schoeffler.
Pope Leo XIII beatified him in 1900. Pope John Paul II canonized him on October 1, 2000, as one of the 120 Martyrs of China.
