Saint John Payne
Saint John Payne (born c. 1532 AD in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England; died April 2, 1582 AD in Chelmsford, Essex, England) was an English Catholic priest who was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Chelmsford for the crime of being an ordained Catholic priest in Elizabethan England. He is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales canonized in 1970. His feast day is April 2 (or October 25 with the group).

Biography
John Payne was born around 1532 in Peterborough. He was ordained a Catholic priest at the English College at Douai in 1576 and returned to England the same year to minister to the recusant Catholic community in Essex. He served as chaplain at Ingatestone Hall — home of the Petre family — and moved through the county administering the sacraments to Catholics who had no other access to them.
He was arrested in 1577, imprisoned, and released. He was arrested again in 1581 and charged both with being a priest (treasonous under Elizabethan law) and with allegedly conspiring to assassinate Queen Elizabeth — a charge almost certainly fabricated by the informer who betrayed him. He was convicted and sentenced to death.
He was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Chelmsford on April 2, 1582. He died affirming his Catholic faith.
Pope Leo XIII beatified him in 1886. Pope Paul VI canonized him as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales on October 25, 1970.
