Saint John Jones
Saint John Jones (born c. 1559 AD in Clynnog Fawr, Gwynedd, Wales; died July 12, 1598 AD in Southwark, London, England) was a Welsh Franciscan priest who was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Southwark for exercising the Catholic priesthood in Elizabethan England. He is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970. His feast day is July 12 (or October 25 with the group).

Biography
John Jones was born around 1559 in Clynnog Fawr in Gwynedd, Wales — a town with deep Catholic roots as a shrine of Saint Beuno. He joined the Observant Franciscans and was ordained a priest in Italy. He returned to England and Wales to minister to recusant Catholic communities who had no other access to the sacraments.
Under the Elizabethan penal laws, being an ordained Catholic priest in England was high treason, punishable by death. John Jones was arrested, imprisoned for about two years (c. 1596–1598), and then tried and condemned. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Southwark on July 12, 1598.
Pope Leo XIII beatified him in 1886 as one of the English martyrs. Pope Paul VI canonized him as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales on October 25, 1970.
