Biography
Almost nothing is known of the life of Illuminata beyond what her name and cult preserve. She was a Christian virgin who was martyred at Todi in Umbria, most likely during the Diocletianic Persecution of c. 303–305 AD.
Her relics were venerated at Todi from an early date, and she became the patron of the city. The Cathedral of Todi has enshrined her memory for centuries. Her name — Illuminata, the illuminated one — was common among early Christian women and suggests her baptismal illumination, as baptism was called illumination (photismos) in the early Church.
Her feast is observed on November 29 in Todi and the Diocese of Orvieto-Todi.
