Saint Ildephonsus
Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo (born c. 607 AD in Toledo, Spain; died January 23, 667 AD in Toledo, Spain) was the Archbishop of Toledo and one of the most important Visigothic theologians and Marian writers. His treatise On the Perpetual Virginity of Blessed Mary (De virginitate perpetua sanctae Mariae) is a landmark text in the history of Mariology. He is famous for the legend in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him, gave him a chasuble, and called him my own chaplain (meus peculiaris notarius). He was a student of Saint Isidore of Seville and a disciple of Saint Ildefonsus of Merida. His feast day is January 23.

Biography
Ildephonsus was born around 607 in Toledo, then capital of the Visigothic kingdom in Spain. He studied under Saint Isidore of Seville — the great encyclopedist and Doctor of the Church — at Seville. He entered the Benedictine monastery of Agali near Toledo, eventually becoming its abbot.
In 657 he was chosen as Archbishop of Toledo — the primatial see of Spain — and governed it with great distinction for ten years until his death in 667. He was a prolific writer in the tradition of Isidore, contributing to the great tradition of Visigothic learning that preserved classical Latin culture in the West.
His most important work is De virginitate perpetua sanctae Mariae (On the Perpetual Virginity of Blessed Mary), a sustained theological defense of Mary's perpetual virginity — before, during, and after the birth of Christ — written in refutation of heretical positions. He also wrote De viris illustribus (On Illustrious Men), continuing the tradition of Jerome and Isidore; a work on baptism; and various liturgical writings.
The most beloved event of his life in Spanish tradition is the apparition of the Virgin Mary in the basilica of Toledo. Mary appeared surrounded by a company of virgin saints, presented Ildephonsus with a chasuble (or vestment) she had herself made, called him her own chaplain, and commanded him to wear the garment for Mass on her feast days. The chasuble was preserved in Toledo as one of the most venerated relics of medieval Spain.
He died on January 23, 667, shortly after the apparition. He is buried in Toledo and remains one of the most beloved saints of Spain.
