Saint Hildegund
Blessed Hildegund of Schönau (born c. 1154 AD in Neuss, Germany; died April 20, 1188 AD in Schönau, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) was a German woman who disguised herself as a male pilgrim and novice monk named Brother Joseph for years — making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, returning through dangerous Europe, and living in the Cistercian monastery of Schönau — where her sex was only discovered after her death. She was beatified by popular acclaim and her feast confirmed by Pope Innocent III. Her feast day is April 20.

Biography
Hildegund was born around 1154 in Neuss on the Rhine. When her father, a widower, decided to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he took his young daughter with him — but dressed her as a boy named Joseph, fearing the dangers of traveling with a girl. Her father died on the journey home, leaving the young Hildegund alone, disguised as Joseph, in a foreign country.
She made her way across Europe by working as a servant, continued the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and survived a series of remarkable adventures including robbery, imprisonment, and a near-execution (she was sentenced to hang, but the rope broke). Throughout, she maintained her male disguise.
Eventually she came to the Cistercian Abbey of Schönau near Heidelberg and asked to be received as a novice. She entered, lived as Brother Joseph, and progressed through novitiate life under the monks' direction. When she died on April 20, 1188, the brothers preparing her body for burial discovered she was a woman.
The community was astonished and immediately venerated her as a holy person. Her story was written down and circulated widely through the Cistercian network. Pope Innocent III confirmed the popular cult around 1198–1200. Her biography belongs to a small medieval genre of cross-dressing female saints (including Saints Pelagia, Eugenia, Theodora, and Marina) — women who assumed male identity to pursue a religious vocation or to travel in safety.
