Saint Hilarion
Saint Hilarion (born c. 291 AD in Tabatha, Gaza, Palestine; died c. 371 AD in Cyprus) was a Palestinian monk and the founder of Palestinian monasticism, who introduced the Egyptian desert tradition of Saint Anthony the Great to the Holy Land. He established a monastery near his birthplace in Gaza that became the seed of a vast monastic movement throughout Syria, Palestine, and beyond. He is sometimes called the Father of Palestinian Monasticism. His feast day is October 21.

Biography
Hilarion was born around 291 AD at Tabatha, a village south of Gaza in Palestine. His parents were pagans. He was sent to Alexandria for his education, where he encountered Christianity and was baptized. Hearing of the great Egyptian monk Saint Anthony the Great, who was living his desert life in Upper Egypt, Hilarion traveled to visit him and spent some months learning the monastic life directly at his feet.
He returned to Palestine around 306 AD, discovered his parents had died, gave away his inheritance to his brothers and the poor, and established a small cell near his birthplace at the edge of the desert. He lived in extreme austerity: his annual food ration was fifteen figs, beginning each year on September 14; he ate only after sunset; he spent his time in prayer, manual work (basket-weaving), and Scripture reading.
As news of his sanctity and miraculous gifts spread, disciples gathered around him. His community grew from a handful to hundreds of monks; visitors from throughout the East came for healing and counsel. Jerome's Life records an extraordinary range of miracles: exorcisms, healings, storm-calming, prophetic knowledge, and more.
Fame became his cross. Fearing the immense crowds, he fled repeatedly — to Egypt, to Sicily, to Dalmatia, and finally to Cyprus, where he died in peace around 371 AD. His disciple Hesychius recovered his body and brought it back to Palestine for burial.
Saint Jerome wrote his Life around 390 AD — one of the most vivid saint's biographies in Latin literature. Jerome held him in the highest regard, treating him as the founder of the monastic movement in the entire eastern Mediterranean outside Egypt.
