Saint Herman Joseph
Blessed Herman Joseph (born c. 1150 AD in Cologne, Germany; died April 7, 1241 AD in Hoven, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was a Premonstratensian (Norbertine) canon at the Abbey of Steinfeld in the Eifel region of Germany, known for his profound Marian devotion and his mystical relationship with the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus. He is reported to have received the name "Joseph" directly from the Virgin Mary, who appeared to him and said he reminded her of her husband Joseph. He was beatified in 1958. His feast day is April 7.

Biography
Herman was born around 1150 in Cologne in a poor family. From early childhood he showed a particular attachment to the Virgin Mary. The most famous childhood story — recorded in his biography — is that he brought apples or some small gift to a statue of the Virgin and Child in a Cologne church and offered them; the Virgin's statue smiled and extended a hand to receive them. Whether taken literally or as the symbolic beginning of his Marian mysticism, this event oriented his entire life.
He entered the Premonstratensian (Norbertine) Order at the Abbey of Steinfeld in the Eifel hills (a region of rolling hills and forests southwest of Cologne, near the modern Belgian border). He professed religious vows and spent his life there as a canon regular. He was known for intense Marian devotion, severe asceticism (hair shirt, fasting), and mystical gifts including ecstasies and visions of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus.
The Virgin appeared to him and named him Joseph — saying his purity and simplicity reminded her of her husband; he took the name Herman Joseph in religion. This name, given by heavenly vision, is one of the most unusual name-origins in hagiography.
He wrote devotional and mystical texts, and composed prayers and hymns to Mary. He died on April 7, 1241, at the Premonstratensian house at Hoven near Zülpich. Pope Pius XII beatified him in 1958.
