Saint Gerard of Brogne
Saint Gerard of Brogne (born c. 895 AD in Stave, Namur, modern Belgium; died October 3, 959 AD in Brogne, Namur, modern Belgium) was a Flemish nobleman and Benedictine monastic reformer who founded the Abbey of Brogne and led a far-reaching renewal of monastic observance across Flanders, Lotharingia, and the Low Countries in the mid-10th century. At a time when many monasteries had fallen into laxity under lay abbots and Viking depredations, Gerard restored strict Benedictine discipline to over twenty houses. His feast day is October 3.

Biography
Gerard was born around 895 in Stave, in the county of Namur (now in southern Belgium), into a noble family. As a young man he served at the court of the Count of Namur, but was drawn to the religious life. He spent several years as a monk at the royal Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris, one of the greatest monasteries in the Carolingian world, where he received thorough formation in Benedictine monastic observance.
Around 914–919 he returned to his family estates in Namur and founded a monastery at Brogne on land he inherited. He constructed a church dedicated to Saint Peter and brought there the relics of Saint Eugène from Paris. The translation of these relics was accompanied, according to his biographers, by miraculous healings that established the new abbey's reputation from the start.
Gerard was ordained a priest and became the first abbot of Brogne. His monastery flourished and came to the attention of the Count of Flanders, Arnulf I, who commissioned Gerard to lead a sweeping reform of the monasteries of his county. Over the following decades Gerard restored Benedictine observance — expelling secular canons and lay abbots, reinstating the Rule of Saint Benedict, and re-establishing regular community life — at over twenty monasteries across Flanders, Lotharingia, and the Low Countries, including the abbeys of Saint-Bavo at Ghent, Saint-Bertin at Saint-Omer, and Saint-Amand in Hainaut.
This reform was part of the great 10th-century monastic renewal that also included the Cluniac reform in Burgundy and the Gorze reform in Lotharingia. Gerard died on October 3, 959, at his monastery at Brogne. The village is now called Saint-Gérard in his honor.
