Saint George Preca
Saint George Preca (born February 12, 1880 AD in Valletta, Malta; died July 26, 1962 AD in Blata l-Bajda, Malta) was a Maltese Catholic priest who founded the Society of Christian Doctrine (Soċjetà tal-Għarfien Tad-Duttrina Nisranija — M.U.S.E.U.M.) to train lay catechists to teach the faith to ordinary people in their own language. He was one of the most beloved figures in Maltese Catholicism, known for his holiness, his mystic experiences, and his tireless service to the poor and sick. He was beatified in 2001 and became the first Maltese person to be canonized when Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in Rome on June 3, 2007. His feast day is May 9.

Biography
George Preca was born in Valletta on February 12, 1880. He showed deep religious sensibility from childhood and was always drawn to prayer and the poor. He trained for the priesthood despite persistent poor health, and was ordained in 1906.
Almost immediately after ordination he began gathering young men — dockers, factory workers, tradesmen — to teach them the catechism so that they in turn could teach others. His insight was profound: in a culture where most Catholics knew very little about their faith beyond what they absorbed from ritual, systematic lay catechists who could teach in Maltese (rather than Latin or Italian) could transform the entire society. He called his organization Soċjetà tal-Għarfien Tad-Duttrina Nisranija — the Society of Christian Doctrine — but it became universally known as MUSEUM, from an interior inspiration he received: Magister utinam sequaris evangelium universis mundi ("Master, may you follow the Gospel to all the world").
MUSEUM faced initial opposition from Church authorities who were nervous about laypeople teaching theology without clerical supervision. Preca submitted completely to ecclesiastical authority and waited; eventually his work received approval, and MUSEUM spread throughout Malta and later to other countries.
He spent his long priesthood in pastoral service: visiting the sick, ministering to the poor, hearing confessions, celebrating Mass — often in private oratories where lay people gathered for catechesis. He was known for mystical gifts: ecstasies during Mass, interior locutions, and reputedly the stigmata (though he hid these).
He died on July 26, 1962, at Blata l-Bajda. Pope John Paul II beatified him during a pastoral visit to Malta in 2001. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in Rome on June 3, 2007 — the first Maltese person to be raised to the altars as a saint.
