Saint Gabriel Lalement
Saint Gabriel Lallemant (born October 10, 1610 AD in Paris, France; died March 17, 1649 AD near Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada) was a French Jesuit priest and one of the Eight North American Martyrs (Canadian Martyrs). He was captured by the Iroquois during their raid on the Huron mission and subjected to prolonged torture over seventeen hours before dying. He had been ordained only a few years and had been in New France for only a few months when he was martyred. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930. His feast day is October 19 in the universal Roman Calendar.

Biography
Gabriel Lallemant was born in Paris on October 10, 1610, into a devout family — his uncle Gabriel Lallemant the Elder was also a Jesuit, and his family had strong connections to the Society. Despite having a frail constitution, he entered the Jesuits and persisted through his formation over many years (Jesuit formation takes a decade or more).
He was ordained a priest in 1638. In 1646 he finally arrived in New France (Canada) to work with the Huron mission. He was assigned to work with the senior missionary Saint Jean de Brébeuf in the Huron country around Georgian Bay (modern Ontario). He had been in New France only about six months.
In March 1649, the Iroquois (then engaged in the Beaver Wars against the Huron) launched a devastating raid on the Huron missions. On March 16, they attacked the village of Saint-Ignace II, capturing Brébeuf and Lallemant. Brébeuf died after hours of torture on March 16. Lallemant was tortured through the night of March 16–17, with burning coals, fire, and mutilation. He died at dawn on March 17, 1649, at the age of 38.
The mission was utterly destroyed. But the witness of the martyrs had a profound effect on the Huron survivors, and the Catholic faith persisted among them. Pope Pius XI beatified the eight Canadian martyrs in 1925 and canonized them in 1930.
