Saint Fructuosus of Braga
Saint Fructuosus of Braga (born c. 600 AD in León, Hispania; died April 16, 665 AD in Braga, Portugal) was a Visigothic nobleman and bishop who became one of the greatest founders of monasteries in early medieval Spain and Portugal. He founded over a dozen monasteries in Galicia, Lusitania, and the Iberian peninsula following his own strict rule (the Regula Fructuosi), and eventually became Archbishop of Braga. He is one of the most significant figures in the history of Iberian monasticism. His feast day is April 16.

Biography
Fructuosus was born around 600 AD into a noble Visigothic family in the León area of Hispania. His father was a military commander. He received a good education and was entrusted to the Bishop of Palencia for clerical formation, but his desire was for the monastic life.
Around 630 AD he began founding monasteries, starting in the remote mountains of El Bierzo in northwestern Spain. His first foundation was Compludo. He went on to found monasteries throughout Galicia, the northwest, and eventually in what is now Portugal. Some sources count as many as twelve or more foundations. He composed the Regula Fructuosi (Rule of Fructuosus) and a Regula Communis (Common Rule), important documents of early Iberian monasticism.
He was eventually consecrated Bishop of Dumium (a monastery-diocese near Braga) and around 656 AD became Archbishop of Braga — the primatial see of northwestern Iberia. He governed the archdiocese with the same monastic spirit until his death in 665.
His legacy was enormous: the monasteries he founded populated Galicia and northwest Iberia with Christian communities, and his rules influenced Spanish and Portuguese monastic life for centuries. A number of his foundations survive in some form to the present day.
