Saint Eucherius of Lyon
Saint Eucherius of Lyon (born c. 380 AD near Lyon, Gaul; died c. 449 AD in Lyon, Gaul) was a Gallo-Roman nobleman who, after a distinguished secular career, renounced the world with his wife and became a monk on the island of Lérins. He later became Bishop of Lyon and is venerated as one of the great spiritual writers of the early Western Church. His spiritual letters, including the Praise of the Desert (De laude eremi) and the On Contempt of the World (De contemptu mundi), are classics of early Western asceticism. His feast day is November 16.

Biography
Eucherius was born into a noble Gallo-Roman family around 380 AD, probably near Lyon. He received an excellent classical education, married a noblewoman named Galla, and had two sons, Salonius and Veranius. Around 410–420, he made a radical break: he persuaded his wife to a life of continence and withdrew to the island monastery of Lérins (Île Saint-Honorat, near modern Cannes), then newly founded by Saint Honoratus of Arles.
At Lérins he met the great ascetic figures of his age: Honoratus, Saint Hilary of Arles, and Saint John Cassian (whose Conferences and Institutes were the formative texts of Western monasticism). His wife and sons lived nearby on the neighboring island (Île Sainte-Marguerite).
During his years at Lérins, Eucherius wrote his most influential works:
- De laude eremi (In Praise of the Desert, c. 426) — addressed to his friend Hilary of Arles; a lyrical celebration of the desert/island life as the ideal setting for contemplation
- De contemptu mundi (On Contempt of the World) — a letter to his kinsman Valerian encouraging renunciation
- Institutio — a spiritual handbook
- Two books of biblical formulas (allegorical/spiritual interpretation)
- A letter on the Passion of the Martyrs of Agaunum (Saint Maurice and companions)
Around 434 AD, Eucherius was elected Bishop of Lyon despite his desire for continued solitude — a common pattern among Lérins monks who were called to episcopal service. He served faithfully and participated in councils. Both his sons also became bishops.
He died around 449 AD in Lyon. His feast day is November 16.
