Biography

Dominic del Val was a young chorister at the Cathedral of Zaragoza in 13th-century Aragon. According to the traditional account, he was killed by members of the Jewish community for unknown reasons. He was venerated as a martyr from the time of his death. His cult was confirmed by Pope Pius VII. His relics are in the Cathedral of the Savior (La Seo) in Zaragoza. He is commemorated on August 31.

Note: The accounts of Jewish child-killing that form the background of medieval "ritual murder" accusations (blood libel) are now recognized by historians as unfounded anti-Semitic accusations that led to terrible persecution of Jewish communities. The Church's veneration of such "martyr" figures must be understood in its historical context; the actual circumstances of the deaths were often unknown, and the accusations reflect medieval prejudice rather than historical fact.
