Saint Dominic de la Calzada
Saint Dominic de la Calzada (born c. 1019 AD in Viloria de Rioja, La Rioja, Spain; died May 12, 1109 AD in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja, Spain) was a Spanish hermit-builder who transformed the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) by building roads, bridges, and a hospital for pilgrims in the Rioja region of northern Spain. The city of Santo Domingo de la Calzada (Saint Dominic of the Causeway) was named after him. A living rooster and hen are kept in his cathedral — a unique tradition related to a famous miracle. His feast day is May 12.

Biography
Dominic was born around 1019 in Viloria de Rioja in Spain. In his youth he tried to enter the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla (a famous Benedictine house) but was rejected — reportedly as unsuited for monastic life. He then tried to enter the monastery of Valvanera but was again refused. Undaunted, he became a hermit under the direction of a holy bishop (Bishop Gregory of Osma), living a life of prayer and penance in the woods of the Rioja.
He then devoted himself to an extraordinary practical apostolate: building infrastructure for the pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago (the Way of Saint James) through the Rioja. He cleared forest, built roads and bridges over the Oja River, and constructed a hospice (hospital) for sick and injured pilgrims. The road he built was so fine that the city which grew up around his hospice was called Santo Domingo de la Calzada — Saint Dominic of the Paved Road.
He spent decades in this work, inspired by the conviction that serving pilgrims was serving Christ. He died on May 12, 1109, and was buried in the church he had built. This became the Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada — a major stop on the Camino de Santiago.
The miracle of the roasted rooster (the milagro del gallo) became the defining story of the shrine. To this day, the cathedral maintains a live white rooster and hen in an ornate Gothic chicken coop on the north wall of the nave — one of the most unusual religious traditions in Spain.
