Saint Dominic Henares (born Francisco Henares, June 19, 1765 AD in Baena, Córdoba, Spain; died June 25, 1838 AD in Nam Định, Vietnam) was a Spanish Dominican bishop and martyr in Vietnam. As coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Tonkin, he was beheaded during the persecution of Emperor Minh Mạng. He was beatified in 1906 and canonized in 1988 as one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. His feast day is November 24.

Biography

Francisco Henares was born in 1765 in Baena, Córdoba, Spain. He joined the Dominicans and was ordained a priest. He volunteered for the Vietnamese mission and arrived in Tonkin (northern Vietnam) in 1793. He worked for 45 years as a missionary in Vietnam, serving as coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Tonkin from 1803.

The Vietnamese Emperor Minh Mạng (reigned 1820–1841) conducted violent persecutions of Catholics. In 1838, at the age of 73, Bishop Henares was arrested. He was beheaded at Nam Định on June 25, 1838, along with his catechist Francis Chiêu. He had served the Vietnamese Church for 45 years.

He is one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 19, 1988. Their feast day is November 24.
