Saint Devasahayam Pillai
Saint Devasahayam Pillai (born April 23, 1712 AD in Nattalam, Tamil Nadu, India; died January 14, 1752 AD in Aralvaimozhi, Tamil Nadu, India) was an Indian Hindu nobleman who converted to Christianity, was arrested by the King of Travancore for his conversion and missionary activity, endured three years of imprisonment and torture, and was shot dead in the jungle. He was the first layman of Indian origin to be canonized. He was canonized by Pope Francis on May 15, 2022. His feast day is January 14.

Biography
Neelakanta Pillai was born April 23, 1712, in Nattalam, Tamil Nadu, to a Hindu Nair noble family. He served as an official at the court of Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore. Through contact with the Dutch captain Eustachius De Lannoy (captured after the Battle of Colachel, 1741) and the Jesuit Father Buttari, he was drawn to Christianity.
He was baptized in 1745, taking the name Devasahayam ("God is my help"). He began preaching the Gospel to people of all castes — including lower castes — proclaiming the equality of all before God. This message was threatening to the Travancore social order.
He was arrested c. 1749 and subjected to three years of imprisonment, torture, and forced marches through jungle terrain. On January 14, 1752, soldiers shot him dead in the jungle near Aralvaimozhi. His body was recovered by Christian converts.
He was beatified in India on December 2, 2012. He was canonized by Pope Francis on May 15, 2022 — the first layman of Indian origin to be canonized by the Catholic Church.
