Saint Cristobal Magallanes Jara
Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara (born July 30, 1869 AD in Totatiche, Jalisco, Mexico; died May 25, 1927 AD in Colotlán, Jalisco, Mexico) was a Mexican diocesan priest martyred during the Cristero War — the anti-Catholic persecution of the Mexican federal government under President Calles. He was the parish priest of Totatiche and was arrested falsely accused of involvement in an uprising, but died praying and forgiving his executioners. He is the leader of the Martyrs of Mexico — 25 martyrs canonized together in 2000. His feast day is May 21.

Biography
Cristóbal Magallanes Jara was born in 1869 in the small town of Totatiche in the highlands of northern Jalisco. He was ordained a priest in 1899 and served as pastor of Totatiche from 1910 onward. He was known as an energetic and effective priest: he organized schools, a seminary for indigenous youth, cooperatives, and social services for his poor rural parish.
The Cristero War (1926–1929) was a violent conflict between the Mexican federal government and Catholic Mexicans. President Plutarco Elías Calles issued laws severely restricting the Church: banning religious education, expelling foreign priests, closing seminaries, and prohibiting public worship. Catholics in Jalisco and other states rose in arms (the Cristeros), though many priests and bishops — including Magallanes — counseled against the armed uprising and sought peaceful means.
In May 1927, Magallanes was arrested on the road while traveling to celebrate a clandestine Mass. He was falsely accused of having instigated an armed Cristero attack (which had occurred the day before his arrest, in a place he had not been). He was given no proper trial. On May 25, 1927, he and a companion priest (Agustín Caloca Cortés) were shot by firing squad at Colotlán.
Before his execution, he gave all his possessions to his executioners, asked their pardon, and forgave them. His last words affirmed his innocence and his willingness to die for Christ.
He is the principal figure among the Martyrs of Mexico — 25 priests and laypeople martyred during the Cristero War and beatified together by Pope John Paul II in 1992 and canonized in 2000.
