Saint Caraunus (also Cheron; dates uncertain; c. 4th–5th century AD) was a Christian pilgrim and martyr venerated in the region of Chartres, France. He is said to have been a Roman or Greek Christian who journeyed as a pilgrim through Gaul and was martyred near Chartres. He is the patron saint of the town of Châteaudun (Dunois) and is venerated in the Diocese of Chartres. His feast day is May 28.

Biography

Saint Caraunus (Cheron) is a pilgrim-martyr venerated in the Chartres region of France. According to tradition he came from the East (Rome or Greece) and was traveling as a Christian pilgrim through Gaul when he was murdered — accounts differ as to whether he was killed by thieves, pagans, or persecutors. His body was discovered and honored, a cult arose, and a church was eventually built in his memory. He is particularly associated with the Dunois region (Châteaudun) in the diocese of Chartres. His feast is observed on May 28.
