Biography

Saint Candida the Elder is venerated in Naples as the first Christian in that city. The ancient tradition holds that she was an elderly woman, ill and bedridden, who was cured and baptized by Saint Peter the Apostle when he passed through Naples on his way to Rome. She thus holds in Neapolitan tradition the place of honor as the first recipient of the faith in that great city.

She is distinguished from the other Saint Candida venerated in Naples (Saint Candida the Younger), and their separate feast days are observed in the Archdiocese of Naples. Saint Candida the Elder is commemorated on September 4.
