Saint Candida Maria of Jesus (born May 10, 1845 AD in Huesca, Aragon, Spain; died June 9, 1912 AD in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain) was a Spanish religious foundress who established the Missionary Sisters of the Schools (Misioneras de la Escuela Cristiana) to provide Catholic education to children. She was canonized by Pope Paul VI on January 25, 1975. Her feast day is June 12.

Biography

Juana Josefa Cipitria y Barriola, who took the name Candida Maria of Jesus in religious life, was born on May 10, 1845 in Huesca, Aragon. Inspired by a deep faith and a desire to serve God through the education of children, she founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Schools (Misioneras de la Escuela Cristiana) in Bilbao in 1881, dedicating the community to running schools for poor children and providing Christian formation.

She spent her life building up the congregation and its schools throughout Spain and beyond. Her congregation grew to have a significant presence in Catholic education. She died in Bilbao on June 9, 1912. Pope Paul VI beatified her on November 30, 1966 and canonized her on January 25, 1975.
