Biography
Callistus Caravario was born in Cuorgné, Piedmont on June 8, 1903. He entered the Salesian congregation founded by Saint John Bosco and was ordained a priest. He was sent to China as a missionary to the Diocese of Shiu Chow (now Shaoguan) in Guangdong Province, serving under Bishop Luigi Versiglia.
On February 24, 1930, Caravario, Bishop Versiglia, and a group of Chinese Christians were traveling by boat on the Stoliang River when they were attacked by river pirates. The pirates demanded that the bishop hand over the young women in the group. When he and Caravario refused to abandon the women and stepped forward to protect them, both were seized and shot dead on February 25, 1930.
They were beatified together by Pope John Paul II on May 15, 1983 and canonized on October 1, 2000.
