Saint Cajus
Saint Cajus (also Caius; died April 22, 296 AD in Rome) was Pope from 283 to 296 AD. He is venerated as a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church, though the historical record of his martyrdom is uncertain. According to tradition he was a relative of the Emperor Diocletian and ordered the clergy to go through the various grades before becoming bishop. He took refuge in the Roman catacombs during the Diocletianic persecution. His feast day is April 22.

Biography
Saint Cajus (Caius) served as Pope from 283 to 296 AD, a period of relative peace for the Church before the great Diocletianic persecution. He is credited with the rule that the clergy must proceed through all the lower orders (porter, lector, exorcist, acolyte, subdeacon, deacon) before being ordained a priest or bishop. Tradition holds that he was a relative of the Emperor Diocletian and that he spent part of his pontificate in hiding in the Roman catacombs. He died on April 22, 296 AD. His remains were interred in the Catacombs of Callixtus, where they were venerated. His feast day is April 22.
