Biography

Buonfiglio Monaldo was one of seven Florentine laymen—members of the Laudesi confraternity of Our Lady—who on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15, 1233, received a vision of the Virgin Mary directing them to found a new Order devoted to meditation on her sorrows. They withdrew to Monte Senario outside Florence, lived as hermits, and eventually developed into the Order of Servants of Mary (Servites).

Buonfiglio is traditionally identified as the first superior general or prior of the nascent community and as the leader among the seven co-founders. For the full account of the Seven Founders, see also Saint Bonfilius. The seven were canonized together by Pope Leo XIII on January 15, 1888.
