Saint Bononius

Saint Bononius (died August 30, 1026 AD at Lucedio, Piedmont, Italy) was an Italian Benedictine monk and abbot of the monastery of Lucedio (Abbazia di Lucedio) near Vercelli in Piedmont. He had earlier lived as a pilgrim in the East—reportedly visiting Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Egypt—before settling at Lucedio and becoming its abbot. He is venerated locally in Piedmont. His feast day is August 30.

Biography

Bononius was an Italian monk who, before settling into the monastic life at Lucedio, made remarkable journeys to the Eastern Christian world—reportedly visiting Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Egypt, and spending time in Eastern monasteries where he encountered the monastic traditions of the Greek and Eastern churches. He returned to Italy imbued with Eastern spiritual practices and settled at the Abbey of Lucedio in Piedmont, eventually becoming its abbot. He governed the community until his death on August 30, 1026. He was venerated locally and his feast was observed on August 30.
