Saint Bertilla Boscardin
Saint Bertilla Boscardin (born October 6, 1888 in Brendola, Veneto, Italy; died October 20, 1922 in Treviso, Veneto, Italy) was an Italian religious nun of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy who served as a nurse in military hospitals during World War I and died of cancer at age thirty-four. Known by her sisters as a somewhat slow learner who found religious formation difficult, she surprised her community with extraordinary spiritual depth, devoted nursing care, and sanctity hidden in the ordinary duties of her calling. She was beatified on June 8, 1952 by Pope Pius XII and canonized on May 11, 1961 by Pope John XXIII. Her feast day is October 20.

Biography
Early life and religious vocation
Anna Francesca Boscardin was born on October 6, 1888 in Brendola, a village in the Venetian hills. She grew up in poverty; her father was a violent alcoholic and her childhood was difficult. She entered the Sisters of Saint Dorothy and received the religious name Bertilla. She was considered slow and academically limited, assigned to kitchen work, and found the early years of religious life challenging. Yet her spiritual depth was genuine and her will to serve absolute.
Nursing ministry
She was assigned to the hospital in Treviso as a nurse, where she proved extraordinarily gifted in caring for the sick. During World War I (1915–1918), the hospital became a military hospital and Bertilla cared for the wounded soldiers, working heroically in the wards even during aerial bombardments. She was particularly devoted to the children's ward, where her patience and loving care made her beloved.
She suffered considerable misunderstanding within her congregation—reassigned from nursing to kitchen work by superiors who found her difficult or by administrative decisions she could not control. She bore these trials with patience and charity that impressed those around her.
Illness and death
In her final years Bertilla was diagnosed with a tumor. She underwent multiple painful operations and died on October 20, 1922 in Treviso, aged thirty-four. Those who attended her death were struck by her serenity and faith.
After her death, popular veneration spread rapidly. She was beatified in 1952 and canonized in 1961 by Pope John XXIII, who held her up as a model of hidden sanctity in ordinary apostolic work.
