Saint Bercharius
Saint Bercharius (also spelled Berchaire, Berchier; born c. 640 AD; died c. March 26, 696 AD at Montier-en-Der, Champagne, France) was a Frankish Benedictine abbot and martyr who founded two important monasteries in Champagne and was killed by a monk he had disciplined. He is venerated as an abbot-martyr. His feast day is March 26.

Biography
Early life and monastic formation
Bercharius was born around 640 in Aquitaine. He came to the court of the Frankish king as a young man and then entered religious life, becoming a monk under Saint Nivard, Archbishop of Reims, and later at the Abbey of Luxeuil—the greatest monastic center in Frankish Gaul, founded by Saint Columbanus. At Luxeuil he received a thorough Benedictine formation and came under the influence of the Columbanian monastic tradition.
Monastic foundations
With the support of the Frankish aristocracy and church, Bercharius founded two important monasteries in the Champagne region:
- Montier-en-Der (Monasterium Dervense) — founded c. 672–673 AD, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul; became a major Benedictine house of the region, important for learning and agriculture.
- Hautvillers — a daughter house also in Champagne (the same monastery where the monk Dom Pérignon would later work in the seventeenth century, though this association is purely historical and not hagiographic).
Martyrdom
Bercharius was killed on March 26, c. 696 AD by a monk named Daguin whom he had disciplined for violations of the Rule. The account in his hagiography presents him as dying in a spirit of forgiveness, refusing to identify his attacker and asking that no punishment be inflicted on him.
He was buried at Montier-en-Der, where miracles were soon reported at his tomb and a cult developed.
