Biography

Saint Berach belonged to the golden age of Irish monasticism in the sixth century. He is traditionally associated with Saint Kevin of Glendalough as a disciple, though this connection may be a later hagiographic linking of notable Irish abbots. He founded a monastery at Cluain Coirpthe in Connacht (associated with the area of Kilbarry in County Roscommon), which became a center of local Christian life. His Life (Betha Beraigh) survives in medieval Irish manuscripts and includes the miracle stories and genealogical connections typical of Irish hagiography. He died around 595 AD and is remembered on February 15.
