Saint Benedetto Menni
Saint Benedetto Menni (born March 11, 1841 in Milan, Italy; died April 24, 1914 in Dinan, Brittany, France) was an Italian member of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God (Fatebenefratelli) who dedicated his life to the care of the mentally ill and to founding hospitals and psychiatric institutions across Spain, Portugal, and Mexico. He was beatified on June 23, 1985 by Pope John Paul II and canonized on November 21, 1999 by Pope John Paul II. His feast day is April 24.
Benedetto Menni embodied the founding charism of Saint John of God—radical charitable service to the sick, especially to those whom society marginalizes—expressed in the specific context of nineteenth-century psychiatric medicine, at a time when the care of the mentally ill was often brutal and dehumanizing.

Biography
Early life and vocation
Benedetto Menni was born March 11, 1841 in Milan into a devout Catholic family. He felt called to consecrated life and in 1860, at age nineteen, entered the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God (the Fatebenefratelli—"do-good brothers"), an order founded in the sixteenth century specifically for the care of the sick. He made his religious profession and was sent to Rome for his novitiate and formation.
Mission to Spain
In 1867, at the personal request of Pope Pius IX, Benedetto was sent to Spain to restore the Hospitaller Order there, which had been suppressed by the anticlerical legislation of the mid-nineteenth century. He arrived virtually penniless and with no community, and spent years rebuilding the Hospitaller presence in Spain: founding hospitals, recruiting brothers, and establishing a particular focus on the care of the mentally ill.
His most significant institutional foundation was the psychiatric hospital at Ciempozuelos near Madrid, opened in 1876—one of the first modern psychiatric facilities in Spain that treated patients humanely rather than simply confining them.
Founding the Hospitaller Sisters
Recognizing that women patients also needed dedicated care that male brothers could not provide, Benedetto worked with two Spanish women—María Josefa Récio and María Angustias Giménez—to found the Congregation of Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1881. This congregation, dedicated to the psychiatric care of women, was one of the first religious institutes specifically oriented toward mental health. Benedetto guided the new congregation through its early years, though he encountered significant opposition and misunderstanding from ecclesiastical authorities that led to his removal from governing the sisters for a period.
Later life and death
After years of active ministry in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico, Benedetto spent his final years in France and died on April 24, 1914 in Dinan, Brittany.
