Saint Belina

Saint Belina (died c. 1135 AD near Troyes, Champagne, France) was a French virgin martyr venerated in the region of Champagne. She is said to have been a young woman of devout life who was murdered by a suitor after refusing to abandon her vowed virginity or to accept his unwanted advances. Her body was thrown into a well; she was subsequently discovered and venerated as a martyr. A church and parish near Troyes bear her name. Her feast day is June 19.

Biography

Belina was a young woman of the Troyes area in Champagne who had consecrated her virginity to God. According to the tradition, a nobleman or local man sought her hand in marriage or made improper advances; when she refused, he killed her and cast her body into a well. She was later discovered and venerated locally as a martyr for her faith and chastity. A church in the area was dedicated to her and her relics were preserved.
