Saint Beatus of Lungern
Saint Beatus of Lungern (also known as Beatus the Hermit; traditional dates: 1st century AD) is a semi-legendary figure venerated as the Apostle of Switzerland—the first Christian missionary to bring the faith to the region of present-day Switzerland. According to the tradition, he was an Irish or British disciple of the Apostle Barnabas (or of the Apostle Peter), who came to the area around Lake Thun in what is now the Bern canton of Switzerland and lived as a hermit in a cave on a cliff above the lake at the site now called Beatushöhlen (Beatus Caves). He is said to have driven a dragon from his cave and to have converted the local population. His feast day is May 9.
The historical basis for Beatus is highly uncertain—no contemporary documents support his existence in the first century—and he is now generally regarded as a legendary figure whose cult arose to provide Switzerland with an apostolic-age founder analogous to the founding missionaries of other European nations. Nevertheless, his veneration is ancient and the Beatushöhlen remain a significant pilgrimage site.

Biography
According to the tradition, Beatus was baptized by Saint Peter or was a disciple of the Apostle Barnabas. He came to the region around Lake Thun in Switzerland and found a large cave on a cliff above the lake—the Beatushöhlen—which was inhabited by a dragon. By the power of his prayer and the sign of the cross, he expelled the dragon and made the cave his hermitage. He lived there for many decades, preaching to the local people and converting them to Christianity.
The cave site, known as the Beatushöhlen (Beatus Caves), lies on the north shore of Lake Thun near Interlaken and remains one of Switzerland's oldest Christian pilgrimage sites. It contains cave formations and a chapel dedicated to Beatus.
The historical tradition as reported here—particularly the apostolic-age dating—is considered legendary by historians. A historical Beatus may have been a Celtic missionary of the 6th or 7th century, but he was subsequently given an apostolic-age biography to make Switzerland's Christianization as ancient as possible.
