Saint Bartholomew of Rossano
Saint Bartholomew of Rossano (also known as Bartholomew the Younger or Bartholomew of Simeri; born c. 1050 AD near Rossano, Calabria, Italy; died February 19, 1130 AD in Rossano) was a Greek-rite Basilian monk and monastic founder from Calabria in southern Italy who established several monasteries and helped revive the Greek monastic tradition in Calabria and Sicily during the Norman period. His most important foundation was the monastery of Santa Maria del Patire (Sancta Maria del Patirion), near Rossano, which became a significant center of Byzantine religious culture in Norman southern Italy. His feast day is February 19.
Bartholomew of Rossano belongs to the tradition of Italo-Greek monasticism—the community of Greek-rite monks who inhabited southern Italy from the early Christian centuries and whose monastic culture survived and in some ways flourished even after the Norman Conquest, which generally favored Latin rite observances. His ability to establish and maintain major monasteries under Norman patronage made him an important figure in the religious history of Norman Sicily and Calabria.

Biography
Bartholomew was born around 1050 near Rossano in Calabria, the southwestern region of Italy that had long been home to a Greek-speaking Christian population. He received a Greek-rite monastic formation and eventually made a pilgrimage to Constantinople and other Eastern centers, deepening his formation in the Basilian monastic tradition.
Returning to Calabria, he established the monastery of Santa Maria del Patire (also called Patirion) on a hillside near Rossano around 1095–1100, under the patronage of the Norman rulers of southern Italy. The Normans, while Latin in rite, found it politically useful to maintain Greek monastic institutions in Calabria and Sicily as a gesture toward their large Greek-speaking subjects, and several major foundations like Santa Maria del Patire received Norman royal support.
Bartholomew also founded a monastery in Messina, Sicily. He died on February 19, 1130, and the monastery of Santa Maria del Patire remained a significant center of Italo-Greek monastic culture for several centuries.
