Saint Bartholomea Capitanjo
Saint Bartholomea Capitanio (born January 13, 1807 in Lovere, Bergamo Province, Italy; died July 26, 1833 in Lovere) was an Italian laywoman and co-foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Lovere who died at the age of twenty-six after a brief life of extraordinary holiness, intellectual gifts, educational work, and Eucharistic devotion. She co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Lovere with Saint Vincenza Gerosa in 1832, an institute devoted to education, the care of the sick, and other works of charity. She was beatified on May 30, 1926 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 22, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. Her feast day is July 26.
Bartholomea Capitanio died so young—just twenty-six—that her entire period of active apostolate lasted only a few years, yet her theological clarity, her gifts as a spiritual director and educator, and the deep interior life that marked her even as a teenager have made her one of the most admired figures in nineteenth-century Italian Catholicism. She is venerated alongside her co-foundress Vincenza Gerosa.

Biography
Early life and formation
Bartholomea Capitanio was born on January 13, 1807 in Lovere, a small town on the western shore of Lake Iseo in the Bergamo province of Lombardy. She was born into a modest family and showed signs of exceptional intelligence and spiritual depth from an early age. She was educated at the local Ursuline convent school in Lovere and distinguished herself both academically and by her intense piety, her devotion to the Eucharist, and her charity toward those around her.
At around age fifteen, Bartholomea made a private vow of chastity and began to engage actively in charitable and educational work in Lovere, teaching catechism to children, visiting the sick, and caring for the poor—all activities she organized independently and with remarkable organizational talent for her age.
Spiritual depth and apostolate
Bartholomea's surviving writings—letters and spiritual notes—reveal a young woman of exceptional theological depth, whose interior life was marked by intense Eucharistic devotion and a keen awareness of the suffering of Christ. She engaged in a rich spiritual correspondence with her confessor and with other persons seeking guidance.
She worked as a teacher and as an organizer of charitable works, and she was known for her gift of persuading others and for the clarity and warmth of her communication. She was deeply influenced by the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Vincent de Paul.
Co-founding the Sisters of Charity
In 1832, Bartholomea joined with Vincenza Gerosa (1784–1847), a wealthy laywoman of Lovere who had been devoting her resources to charitable work for some years, to found the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Lovere. The two women pooled their gifts—Bartholomea's organizational energy and intellectual formation, Vincenza's age, resources, and experience—to establish a community devoted to the education of girls and the care of the sick.
Death
Bartholomea had been suffering from tuberculosis. She died on July 26, 1833 in Lovere, at the age of twenty-six—only about a year after co-founding the congregation. The brevity of her active apostolate made her life all the more remarkable: in a few years she had helped establish a religious congregation, produced a body of spiritual writings of lasting value, and formed a reputation for holiness that survived her death.
