Saint Balther
Saint Balther (also known as Balthere; died c. 756 AD) was a Scottish monk and hermit who lived on the Bass Rock, the dramatic volcanic sea stack in the Firth of Forth off the coast of East Lothian, Scotland. He is venerated alongside Saint Baldred of Tyninghame, with whom he shares a feast day of March 6, as one of the Celtic Christian holy men who sanctified the rugged coastline of the Lothians through a life of prayer and ascetic contemplation.
The Bass Rock, rising steeply from the sea approximately two miles from the North Berwick coast, was an ideal site for a Celtic Christian hermit: remote, dramatic, and surrounded by sea—a place of natural grandeur suited to contemplation of the Creator. Balther's choice of this location places him in the tradition of Irish and Scottish monks who sought isolated places, often islands or sea rocks, for solitary prayer.

Biography
Saint Balther lived as a hermit on the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth during the eighth century. He is remembered in local Scottish tradition alongside Saint Baldred of Tyninghame, and the two share a feast day of March 6, which may indicate they died on the same day or that their cults were merged in local commemoration. Specific details of Balther's life beyond his association with the Bass Rock are not recoverable from surviving sources.
