Saint Allerius
Saint Allerius (also known as Alferius or Alfiero; born c. 930 AD near Salerno, Italy; died April 12, 1050 AD at Cava dei Tirreni, Salerno Province, Italy) was a Benedictine monk and the founder of the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity of Cava (Abbazia della Santissima Trinità di Cava), one of the great Benedictine abbeys of southern Italy, located in the hills above Cava dei Tirreni in Campania. After a distinguished career as a courtier in the service of the Principality of Salerno, Allerius converted to monastic life, studied under Saint Odilo of Cluny at Cluny Abbey in Burgundy, and returned to found a monastic community that became a significant center of Benedictine life in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. He died at the remarkable age of approximately one hundred and twenty years. His feast day is April 12.
The Abbey of Cava, which Allerius founded, became one of the most influential monasteries in southern Italy and played a major role in the ecclesiastical life of the Norman kingdom. Allerius is venerated as its founder and patron saint.

Biography
Early life and conversion
Allerius was born around 930 AD near Salerno and served for many years as a courtier in the court of the Prince of Salerno, Guaimar III or his successor. After a serious illness, he resolved to leave the world and consecrate himself entirely to God. He traveled to Cluny Abbey in Burgundy, then the most influential Benedictine monastery in Europe under Abbot Saint Odilo, and received his monastic formation there.
Return to Italy and foundation
After his formation at Cluny, Allerius returned to the Salerno area and initially lived as a hermit in a grotto in the hills above Cava dei Tirreni. Disciples gathered around him, and to give structure to their common life he founded the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity of Cava (Abbazia della Santissima Trinità di Cava) around 1011 or 1025 (dates vary in the sources). He governed the new community himself, instilling in it the Cluniac spirit of reforming Benedictine observance.
The Abbey of Cava flourished after Allerius's time, receiving papal and Norman royal patronage and becoming one of the most important monasteries of the Kingdom of Sicily. It remained an active Benedictine community into the modern period.
Death
Allerius died on April 12, 1050, at a very advanced age—traditional accounts credit him with approximately 120 years of life, which, while likely exaggerated, reflects the impression of extreme old age he made on his contemporaries.
