Biography

Saint Alexander of Gaza suffered martyrdom during the Diocletianic Persecution in the region of Gaza in Roman Palestine. The persecution under Emperor Diocletian, launched in 303 AD, required the destruction of Christian scriptures and churches, the removal of Christians from public office, and ultimately demanded that all Christians sacrifice to the Roman gods—a demand that faithful Christians could not meet without apostasy.

Alexander refused to renounce his faith or sacrifice to the Roman gods. He was arrested, subjected to interrogation and torture, and put to death for his confession of Christ. His feast was established on March 12 in the martyrological tradition.

Gaza was an important city in Roman Palestine with a significant early Christian community; it had its own bishop by the late second century and would later produce the great monastic communities associated with Abba Isaiah of Gaza and Barsanuphius of Gaza in the fifth and sixth centuries.
