Saint Alexander of Comana
Saint Alexander of Comana (also known as Alexander the Charcoal Burner; died c. 275 AD) was an early Christian bishop and martyr who served as Bishop of Comana in Pontus (present-day northern Turkey) and was martyred for his faith, probably during the reign of Emperor Aurelian. He is especially notable for the story associated with his election as bishop: discovered to be living as a charcoal seller while secretly possessing a high level of learning and holiness, he was chosen as bishop to the surprise of those who knew him only by his humble exterior. This story gave him the memorable epithet "the Charcoal Burner." His feast day is August 11.
The story of Alexander's election is preserved in the Life of Gregory the Wonder-Worker by Saint Gregory of Nyssa, which records that Gregory Thaumaturgus, the great third-century bishop of Neocaesarea, was seeking a bishop for Comana. When his candidate was rejected, Gregory prayed for guidance and was inspired to consider a poor, dirty charcoal seller who was present in the crowd. When Gregory began to question the man about religious matters, the charcoal burner's replies revealed extraordinary learning and piety concealed beneath his humble appearance. Gregory elected him bishop, and Alexander proved to be an admirable pastor until his martyrdom.

Biography
The story of Alexander of Comana is told by Saint Gregory of Nyssa in his Life of Gregory Thaumaturgus. Alexander was living as a charcoal seller in Comana, apparently in reduced circumstances, when Gregory the Wonder-Worker came to the city to find a bishop. After Gregory's preferred candidate was rejected by the community, Gregory prayed and was inspired to look again at those present. His attention was drawn to the poor, blackened charcoal seller—seemingly the most unlikely candidate in the assembled crowd. When Gregory questioned him, the man revealed a soul of extraordinary learning, piety, and spiritual depth, hidden beneath a deliberately humble exterior. This concealment of his gifts was itself a sign of his advanced spiritual life—a form of "holy foolishness" or voluntary humiliation that was recognized in the early Eastern Church as a mark of genuine sanctity.
Gregory elected Alexander bishop of Comana. He proved an excellent pastor, governing the church of Comana faithfully until the persecutions of the third century claimed his life. He was burned to death, probably during the persecution under Emperor Aurelian (270–275 AD).
