Saint Aldric of Le Mans (Latin: Aldricus; born c. 800 AD in Gâtinais, France; died January 7, 856 AD in Le Mans, Sarthe, France) was a ninth-century Frankish bishop who served as the Bishop of Le Mans from 832 until his death. He was formed at the imperial court of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, served as imperial chaplain and confessor, and was appointed to the see of Le Mans by Louis the Pious. As bishop, he was a vigorous administrator, builder of churches, and pastoral reformer who participated in the great Carolingian program of ecclesiastical renewal. His feast day is January 7.

Aldric represents the best tradition of the Carolingian reform episcopate—men of the highest ecclesiastical formation who combined broad learning, court connections, and genuine pastoral energy in the governance of their dioceses. His tenure at Le Mans was marked by extensive building programs, the reorganization of the diocese's resources, and a firm participation in the ecclesiastical politics of the later Carolingian empire.

Biography

Biography

Aldric was born around 800 AD in the Gâtinais region of the Frankish kingdom. He was educated at the Palace School of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious—the great center of Carolingian intellectual renewal—and received the finest education available in early ninth-century Europe. He became a member of the imperial chapel and served as chaplain and confessor to Emperor Louis the Pious, placing him at the very center of Carolingian ecclesiastical and political life.

In 832, Emperor Louis appointed him Bishop of Le Mans, a significant Loire valley see. As bishop, Aldric devoted himself to the improvement of his diocese: he rebuilt or repaired the cathedral and numerous churches, organized the resources of the diocese more effectively, supported the monasteries within his jurisdiction, and participated in the ecclesiastical councils of the era.

He governed Le Mans through the turbulent final years of the reign of Louis the Pious (who died in 840) and the subsequent conflicts among Louis's sons that eventually produced the partition of the Carolingian empire. He remained a figure of continuity and stability for the Church of Le Mans through these political upheavals.

He died on January 7, 856, at Le Mans, having served as bishop for twenty-four years. His feast was established on January 7 in the local tradition.
