Saint Aldemar
Saint Aldemar the Wise (also known as Aldermar or Aldimarus; born c. 1000 AD; died March 24, c. 1080 AD) was an Italian Benedictine monk and monastic founder venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a confessor. Born in Capua in southern Italy, he entered the great Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino and eventually became a disciple of the reforming monk Blessed Aligern of Monte Cassino. He founded several monasteries in the Abruzzo region of Italy, most notably the monastery of Bucchianico (San Salvatore a Maiella), and was known for his wisdom, his gift of miracles, and his effectiveness as a spiritual director and teacher. His feast day is March 24.
Aldemar lived in the era of the Gregorian Reform—the great movement to free the Church from lay control and to restore the integrity of the monastic and priestly life—and he represents the best of the monastic renewal that accompanied this reform. His foundations in the Abruzzi helped to Christianize and stabilize a region that was undergoing the turbulent transition from Lombard to Norman rule.

Biography
Aldemar was born around 1000 AD in Capua, in the Campania region of southern Italy. He entered the Abbey of Monte Cassino—the mother house of Benedictine monasticism, founded by Saint Benedict himself—and became a disciple of Aligern, a reforming monk and later abbot of Monte Cassino who worked to restore the monastery's discipline following a period of disruption. Under Aligern's guidance, Aldemar received a thorough formation in the Benedictine tradition and developed the spiritual depth that would characterize his subsequent monastic foundations.
He was given permission to leave Monte Cassino and undertake a mission of monastic foundation in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, a mountainous territory that was in need of monastic centers for both religious and cultural development. He founded several monasteries, of which the most important was the monastery at Bucchianico in the province of Chieti, dedicated to San Salvatore. He governed this community as abbot and became renowned for his wisdom and his gift of healing.
He died around March 24, 1080, at Bucchianico, and his cult immediately developed in the local community. He was venerated as a patron of Bucchianico and of the surrounding region of the Chieti province.
